The new public charging plaza is not just a place where electric cars can charge quickly. It is part of the Energy Roundabout: a smart energy system in which various facilities are interconnected. Examples include the solar park at Energiepark Ballumerbocht, a battery, the wastewater treatment plant, the Municipal Works department, and the new charging plaza.

By connecting these components, sustainably generated energy can be used directly on the island as much as possible. The battery stores excess energy for times when demand is higher. This reduces the load on the electricity grid. That is an important advantage, because capacity on the power grid is limited on Ameland as well.
