Grid congestion: how you can help

Ameland welcomes tourists and invites them to contribute to the preservation of this unique island. The 650,000 guests who visit Ameland each year have an impact on the balance of the electricity grid. However, visitors (and residents) can assist…

Our power grid is under strain at peak times, especially when everyone uses electricity at the same time or when solar panels supply a lot of electricity at the same time. But did you know that you can make a difference with just a few small adjustments?

4 simple tips

Among other things, it contains 4 simple tips that you can apply immediately:

  • Charge smartly and safely Preferably charge your electric car or bicycle during the day (between 11:00 and 16:00) – that’s when there is a lot of solar power.

Remove your battery from the charger when it is 100% charged. This extends its service life, is safer and saves power.

Charging your car? Use an official charging station, which is faster and safer, among other things.

  • Spread your electricity consumption Use appliances that use a lot of power (such as washing machines or dishwashers) during the day rather than at times when many people are using electricity (such as just after dinner). Better still: dry your laundry outside.

  • Switch appliances off completely Unplug chargers for mobile phones, tablets and laptops when they are fully charged. Standby = standby power consumption!

  • Be mindful of heating and cooling Air conditioning or heating on? Close windows and doors properly. Use the sun wisely. Open curtains when it’s cold for free heat. And close them when it’s hot to keep the cool air inside.
