End of programme IANOS project

To conclude the five-year IANOS programme, a meeting was held on Terceira, Portugal. On this island – one of the two pilot islands of the project – all parties involved came together to present the results achieved, exchange experiences and discuss the next steps.

On Ameland, IANOS participated in the technical pilots, involvement of citizen energy initiatives and demonstration of innovative storage and flexible systems. For example, as part of the IANOS project, a battery ( https://www.duurzaamameland.nl/nieuws/accu-bij-natuurcentrum/) was installed at the Nature Centre ( https://www.natuurcentrumameland.nl).

About IANOS

The IANOS project (IntegrAted SolutioNs for the DecarbOnisation and Smartification of Islands) focused on developing integrated solutions to reduce CO2 emissions, linked to a digital system (a virtual power plant) that coordinated the various solutions.

35 partners from 10 countries

The IANOS consortium comprised 35 partners from 10 European countries. The Dutch partners were Repowered, SeaQurrent, [SuWoTec](https:// https://suwotec.com/), Neroa, New Energy Coalition (NEC), TNO, AEC and, of course, the municipality of Ameland.

Follow-up projects

Formally, the IANOS project period runs from 1 October 2020 to 31 December 2025. Although this marks the end of the active demonstration phase, the results, tools (such as the Island Energy Planning & Transition Suite) and lessons learned will be continued through follow-up projects. On Ameland, these include the Ballumerbocht Energy Park project. Ballumerbocht Energy Park (solar park, battery and sewage treatment plant) may eventually be expanded with new technologies such as a fast-charging station and a system that converts organic waste – such as sewage sludge – into energy: The Energy Roundabout.
